Pilates for men
Sometimes men think of Pilates as a ‘girlie workout’. This attitude vanishes once you try it out for yourself and see how challenging it is. It was after all, invented by a man – Joseph Pilates.
Men are often referred to London Pilates Studio by a GP or other healthcare professional. They often arrive suffering from back or neck pain or problems with joints and quite quickly become committed to the discipline.
I work on spinal mobility and stretching hips and shoulders. Although you want immediate results, you never want to feel pain, just invigorated and relaxed at the end of your session. I work alongside physiotherapist Alan Watson in his BiMAL Medical Centre and integrate Pilates workouts into therapeutic and rehabilitation programmes.
Posture, strength and shapeHappily, the core muscles that Pilates targets so perfectly, eradicates potbellies and love handles. Two things that are top of the wish list for most men!
London Pilates Studio has state-of-the-art equipment from STOTT Pilates, which is a contemporary, anatomically-based approach to Joseph Pilates’ original exercise method. Workouts can be tailored for small groups as well as for individuals. There is a maximum of four guys per session – it’s all about quality not quantity! Best of all, there is no expensive gym membership or joining fee. Just pay as you go or book a block of sessions for a discount – up to you!
I pay special attention to strengthening the lower back, shoulders and neck. We all spend too much time sitting at desks and in cars and peering at screens. Pilates helps to correct your posture, open up your chest, so helps to counter the effect of all that hunching.
I aim to achieve an absence of pain and I have clients that tell me that their workouts have kept them out of surgery. That means a lot to me.
